Everybody knows about
London, Paris, Rome, and Vienna, but there are not too many who know about Vilnius, Mendoza, and Chania. However, these are excellent
vacation destinations as they have a lot to offer.
Here are 7 of the world’s top hidden destinations.
1. Austin, Texas, USA:
Many people may not realize it, but Austin is actually the
capital city of Texas, not Dallas/Fort Worth or Houston. It’s quickly becoming one of
America’s most popular spots to vacation and live, especially with younger professionals, students, and artists.
The downtown area is quite vibrant and there are many trendy, upscale neighbourhoods to explore. However, there’s still a nice, small-town charm to Austin. There are plenty of
activities and
attractions to enjoy as well as some wonderful golf courses,
parks, and hiking trails. The dining, nightlife, and shopping are all world class and the music scene is one of the best in the world.
2. Vilnius, Lithuania:
Vilnius is Lithuania’s capital city and is rife in European medieval history. It’s Old Town section is a
UNESCO World Heritage Site and it is
home to close to 2,000 gothic, medieval, baroque, and renaissance structures. All of them surround the city’s neo-classical town hall and cathedral.
There’s also a very interesting KGB Museum which sits inside of a former Soviet Union prison. If you’d like to get a spectacular view of the city you should head to the Higher Castle, which was built in the 13
th century.
3. Chaweng, Thailand:
This vibrant city sits on the east coast of the island of Samui. It’s got a thriving nightlife as there are numerous pubs, nightclubs, and bars to dance the night away in. Because of this, Chaweng is quite popular with younger visitors. They flock to the beautiful beach in the daytime for swimming and diving adventures and hit the town at night. It’s also an ideal family location due to the city’s and island’s
natural beauty.
4. Lyon, France:
Lyon is one of the more well known cities on the list and it’s a popular UNESCO World Heritage site. The picturesque city has a long and rich history that stretches back about 2,000 years. The city was known as Lugdunum when it was under control of the Roman Empire and it became an important producer of silk and an industrial location.
There are numerous attractions such as the
Temple of Cybele, the historic Basilica of Fourvière, Roman theaters, and the cathedral Primatiale St-Jean. The surrounding Rhone region is also well known for its dining delicacies.
5. Mendoza, Argentina:
This tranquil city sits in the
shadow of Mount Aconcagua, which is the highest peak in the Western Hemisphere. Mendoza is also the name of the regional province that the city resides in. it’s a popular place with adventure enthusiasts as they visit the city to participate in skiing, rafting, hiking and mountain climbing. The region also produces some excellent world-class wines and there are more than 1,000 vineyards to tour.
6. Chania, Greece:
Chania is quite similar to the Italian city of Venice. It’s located in the western section of the
island of Crete and was ruled by the Venetians during the 1400s. You’ll notice that a lot of the architecture has an Italian influence. The Venetian Harbor is the place to be if you’d like to soak in the atmosphere and people watch. The old town also has many charming narrow alleys and shops to explore. The nearby beaches are ideal for enjoying the sun, sand, and
water.
7. San Sebastian – Donostia, Spain:
San Sebastian is located along the sea in the northern area of Spain’s Basque Country. It’s an ideal destination for surfing, swimming, and sunbathing. This charming city is home to a pair of sandy beaches and provides fantastic views of
La Concha Bay. There are numerous tapas bars and seafood restaurants to try the local cuisine and if you hike up Mount Igueldo you’ll get some excellent views of the countryside. Over on Monte Urgell, you’ll find the Statue of Christ.
